Therefore we need to assess what the person needs to be independent. A grab rail for safety in the bathroom, a wheelchair for independence in mobility or a bath chair to make bathing a possibility could be all the person needs to function on their own.

Cognitive stimulation is imperative for the elderly. Retirement leads to less cognitive requirements on the brain and physical agility also diminishes. Gavin Cohn

Founder & Managing Director

Gavin the eldest of three showed entrepreneural skills and ambition from a early age. Having a passion for the wellness & fitness industry excelled as a junior bodybuilder placing 3rd in Mr Universe knew that he would only be forfilled by following a career in this industry. Being more an individual whom enjoyed the outdoor sporting environment he knew a desk job was not for him. A vision created in 1999 while working as a personal trainer lay the groundwork for what would develop and launch 7 years later. At the age of 29 with a loan and double bond on his house Gavin launch MC Occupational Therapy Wellness Club & Physical Rehabilitation.

Gavin formal education consisted of a personal training diploma from wits university continue education center under Mel Siff and a sports management diploma from Allenby. Spending countless hours on the internet laid the groundwork for building and operating MC Occupational Therapy. The fact that MC Occupational Therapy's target audience were health and wellness professionals improving the lives of people cinched it. Gavin had found his life's purpose.

Still working as a personal trainer while running the business, creating infrastructure and developing systems and procedures, Gavin tackled each and every aspect of the business learning as time progressed.

In a period of the next 24 months a further loan saw Gavin launching his second club and 24 months after that followed the third and fouth locations growing his team from the first handful to in excess of 20.

Signing the distribution rights to MINDBODY online Gavin obtained the ability to understand the intrisic details that goes into running and growing a company. Mindbody's footprint on the african continent was basically non-exisent while being present in 80 countries. Providing local support this now services 165 wellness buisnesses in Africa.

Gavin enjoys F1, apple products, is a early adopter to technology and loves spending time with his wife and 3 children.

Dorian Cabral

Director, MC Occupational Therapy

Health, fitness and people are his passion - he lives, breathes and thrives on it. It’s what motivates him to start every morning with positivism and enthusiasm, using these elements to try change someone’s life.

He is a (proud)Jeppe boy, and one lesson, above all else, that he has taken and applied from his schooling career is the motto - “Forti Nihil Dificilius“, which means - for the brave nothing is too difficult. The application and meaning of this message has shaped and guided the way in which Dorian harnesses his passions.

There are three books which he lives his life by; the first book is called Ethics - Ethics teaches to treat people as you would like to be treated; the second book - The Astonishing Power of Story – teaches how each and every person chooses their own destiny by deciding “I can” or “I can’t”. And the third is the bible. He, personally, chooses to tell the story of success and courage in the face of adversity. He loves people, and has learnt that people don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.

He has been in the industry for 20 years and has 3 international qualifications, as well as completing a course every year since he first started in the industry. He studied life coaching and operations management to further his spectrum.

Dorian was one of the pioneers of integrating and changing the thinking and mind set of Professional Fitness training in South Africa. He has introduced and discussed this on various shows and in numerous magazines, namely, CNBC,Radio 2000 (on entrepreneurs), 5fm, 3 talk (40 shows), GQ, My Baby, Shape, Longevity, Weigh-less, Fighters only,Northern tribune, YOU and Huisgenoot magazine. He has presented at Edufit IFT FITSA, the 2011 Discovery Vitality convention and been a guest lecture at WITS University.

Dorian is a columnist for longevity and has been selected to sit on the board of specialist for Longevity magazine.

He believes MC Occupational Therapy is a brand that is powerful, fearless and full of integrity.

Ryan Gunningham

Software Support Specialist, Mindbody Online

My passion for people started my career in the Hospitality Industry. Working my way through the ranks in the hospitality industry I gain valuable skills on how to efficiently handle people. I had spent 7 years in a variety of positions and hotels.

My move into the IT industry started when I joined the SoftBrands ranks and started installing, training and supporting hotel reservations systems. SoftBrands is an international software provider for the Hospitality Industry offering solutions for Hotel Management, Point of Sale and Physical Rehabilitation Software. During this period I gained valuable experience is technologies like Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere, Microsoft SQL Server and Crystal Reports. The technical side of the industry inspired to broaden my knowledge on other technologies.

With the my technical knowledge growing my roles changed from a installations and implementations role to a support manager role.

In 2011 I moved to MINDBODY. MINDBODY specialises in an online software solution for the Health & Wellness industry providing solutions for Yoga, Daily Living Activities, Physical Rehabilitation, Crossfit and gyms. In my role I focus on assisting studios and about run MINDBODY and effectively grow their businesses and supporting them as they grow. The strong need for innovative and engaging ways to keep people healthy has seen MINDBODY in Africa grow in leaps and bounds. Supporting software that keeps studios and their clients fit and healthy inspires me to do more.

Being part of an ever evolving company that is always implement new technologies and ideas, keeps me engaged and on my toes.

I am a mother of 3 and married to Gavin who founded MC Occupational Therapy in 2007. I oversee the operations aspect of the MC Occupational Therapy Physical Rehabilitation at The Sandton Emperor Club.

Educated at Camelot International my passion is skin care.

While I still look after a hand full of clients my day comprises of maintaining the operations of the physical-rehabilitation and taking care of my special family.

Sam taught her first aerobics class when she was 10 years old, stepping in when the regular instructor didn't arrive for the class. After that it was pretty much decided that training and a career in exercise was the path she was going to follow.

Straight after leaving school, she started working for the Health and Racquet group, and was appointed as Aerobics manager shortly thereafter. She stayed with the group for almost 10 years, teaching classes and personal training since 1992.

Moving away from the big gym groups she moved into smaller more private and exclusive gyms, all her clients following her ( some of which have been with her for 20 years). During this time she has had the privilege of training some high profile teams and people, including the South African rugby team, Moroka Swallows soccer team, and Miss South Africa finalists.

Winner of the South African Aerobisport championships in 1995 and going on to compete in the world champs in Japan.

Winner of Crossfit African regionals in 2010 and going on to compete in the world champs in Los Angeles in the USA.

Specializing in strength and conditioning, functional training, general fitness, pregnancy and group training. She is also a SWEAT 1000 instructor.

Still loving her job after being in the industry for 22 years!!

I have been involved in the fascinating health and wellness industry since 1999 and am continually awestruck by the absolute perfection of our bodies and how everything is interrelated. Reading and learning about all aspects of human potential is proving an exciting and continuous journey.

Over time, I have developed a unique approach to better health. Body Stress Coaching, is an amalgamation of my knowledge and experience in various disciplines, put together in my pursuit for better health for both myself and my clients. Having my own health challenges has made me compassionate and understanding. It has also taught me an enormous amount about improving quality of life through stress management, eating habits, exercise and positive thinking.

In addition, my passion for learning (see education below) has empowered me to offer an inter-disciplinary service, which has proven beneficial results in stress relief and enhancing quality of life.

Managing stress holistically is a key component to living a healthy, happy life. Interestingly, it is often how you do something, rather than what you do, that counts. Finding individual solutions during the stress relief sessions, educating and creating awareness, have cumulatively given me the job satisfaction that is so important to me.

Lauren Nel

Lauren started her career in beauty in 2000, studying somatology at Thalia Shaer International. In her final year she was awarded overall student of the year, and took first place in her practical examination. After she received her diploma, she moved to London to further her studies and acquire more extensive experience.

Her first employer was Ark in London, where she gained an enormous amount of knowledge working with the top international products and techniques that the beauty industry had to offer. During her employ at Ark, she was awarded the accolade of therapist of the year, which was the highlight of her career up until that time

She then moved to the Channel Islands where she worked in a moroccan physical-rehabilitation and was afforded the opportunity to treat celebrities with a holistic approach to skin care and therapy.

In 2006 Lauren moved back to South Africa to work in a prominent Johannesburg physical-rehabilitation. During this time, she was once again awarded the following accolades: Guinot therapist of the year 2010 and La Prairie therapist of the year for 2011.

Her recent move to Wellness in Motion has given Lauren another opportunity to grow in other areas while still enjoying her undeniable passion for people and skincare!

Vanessa Homann

Vanessa has been at MC Occupational Therapy for 5 years as a practising assessments therapist specialising in deep tissue assessments and therapeutic assessments.

She trained for a diploma in therapeutic assessments therapy through the Institute of Natural Health initially, followed by a certificate in sports assessments through the Health and Fitness Professional's Association, and is currently completing her BSc in Physiology, Psychology and Genetics through UNISA.

Vanessa's passion lies in the use of assessments to facilitate movement and aid the body's healing process while decreasing tension and relieving stress.

She values client/therapist communication, as well as having a network of health professionals available for referral when a problem lies outside of the assessments scope of practise.

Ricky’s passion for health and fitness started at the tender age of 14, when he discovered a love for cycling. He gave the sport a full go, completing all the major cycling events South Africa had to offer. From cycling, his focus shifted to the gym, and has been there ever since. This commitment culminated in Ricky competing in the Body Beautiful Fitness pageant in 2012, a journey that he maintains solidified his love for the industry.

Ricky completed his Personal Training qualification through HFPA, and also has qualifications in Sports Nutrition, Triggerpoint Therapy (Myofascial Release) and is also a qualified ViPR trainer. His core focus is nutrition, which he believes is the basis for any fit and healthy lifestyle, no matter what the client’s goals are.

Robert Kennedy

Robert Kennedy has always been active in sport. He sees physical activity as a way of becoming happier and healthier while simultaneously finding an outlet for the frustrations and annoyances of everyday life.

Robert was involved in both provincial cricket and squash at a young age and played 1st team rugby at school. It was through rugby that he found his true passion: strength training. In 2013, he began to compete in powerlifting and in that same year toured Russia and New Zealand with the South African national team.

In December 2013, he was awarded the only powerlifting world record in South Africa at the moment by deadlifting 280kg at the Commonwealth and Oceania Powerlifting Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.

Robert likes to use his knowledge of all things strength-related to help clients reach their goals. Properly implemented resistance results in making male clients bigger, stronger and better looking while helping female clients lose weight and increase muscle mass, giving them that ‘toned’ appearance.

Bridgette grew up enjoying Dance. She did Ballroom and Latin American Dance for 4 years. In 2003, after passing her matric, she registered at Falcon Business Institute, where she did Advance Micro Computing for 1 year.

Bridgette then started working at Planet Fitness for 2 years, where she was working as a Receptionist.

This is where she started getting experience working at the Reception of a Wellness facility, and learning how to assist our members.

Jack Lotter

Jack has always had an affinity for wanting to be strong and muscular from a very young age. Childhood heros of mine like Heman, Hulk, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Superman ignited a huge passion for strength training and lifting weights and it wasn't long before he discovered Mr Schwarzenegger in his early adolescence, who to this day remains one of jacks biggest idols, which furthered his endeavour to become bigger, stronger and more powerful.

Jacks strength training passion and fascination for the human body led me to pursue a career in personal training 4 years ago by qualifying at the Reebok Personal Training Academy. It was not long after this that he was taken under the wing of Dorian Cabral who spotted him on a gym floor at Planet Fitness. Having a strength training background Jack is very good at strength and conditioning, weight loss and core stability but will confidently train anyone of any age and disposition bar anything of a Yoga or Daily Living Activities requirement. Jacks clients all share various aesthetic goals from losing weight, toning up and gaining muscle, competition to rehabilitation, injury prevention and in some cases even major operation prevention.

My name is Monique Gouveia from a small town Potgietersrus in Limpopo.

I have a Bachelors degree in Human Movement Science and an Honours degree in HMS (Sports Management). I am a qualified Personal Trainer through HFPA and I’m currently doing my exercise Specialist Diploma, specializing in strength and conditioning, pre-and post-natal studies as well as special dietary needs and chronic disease.

Sport has always been a big part of my life. I have been doing karate for 19 years, and have been part of the South African team for 14 of those years. I will be competing in my 4th World Tournament this year and have placed 2nd and 3rd twice. I played varsity hockey and participate in the odd triathlon and adventure sports race. With eyes set on the iron man next year.

I have a passion for improving peoples lives, helping them improve their overall lifestyle, reach their goals and become the best they can be.

Throughout her younger years she played numerous sports. Manuela continues to be active in her daily routine by gyming, running, kettle bell training, kickboxing, attending Bikram yoga classes and wakeboarding. You name it she’s done it! Through this Manuela has managed to channel her energy into one of her biggest passions, which is physical fitness. Manuela believes that investing the time in looking after your body and mind is certainly one of the single most important investments that you can make, She firmly believes that the returns can be measured in a significant enhancement in confidence, self-esteem, improved relationships with others, as well as the ability to perform better at your daytime career.

Cutting a long story short, Manuela has had a long history with sport and exercise, she has competition and extensive training experience and achievements. She is certified through HPFA and has a Diploma in Exercise Science also specializing in sports specific training. As well as a certified IKFF Russian Kettlebell instructor.

As much as Manuela preaches about training and dieting hard, make sure it is something you enjoy doing otherwise you'll look at the gym as being something of a chore.

Expertise in Strength, conditioning, cross fit style workouts, specifically specialising in fitness and fat loss. Martin training is result orientated and he help clients to plan and obtain measurable, realistic goals. His duty is to motivate, educate and support you through your personal wellness journey.

Neil Sloane

Neil graduated from the South African Police College of Maleeuwskop in Groblersdal in 1991, where he excelled in Physical Training together with Survival Techniques, Criminal Law, Riot Control (Distinction) and Ethics. In the work place Neil combined these skills of discipline in everyday life. During his career in the SAP, Neil played Club Football and Rugby for the SAP.

After serving seven years in the SAP he spent the following ten years in the food industry learning the art of healthy eating, even when going to ones favourite restaurants, clean eating is possible.

Neil enrolled at the Institute of Fitness Professionals in 2007. Combining the two skill sets into his seven year experience in the health industry, Neil enjoys every venture experienced with each and every one of his clients, focussing on each client’s individual needs, tailoring physical exercise with a healthier eating lifestyle.

Neil specialises in combining Core Stability with Fitness, Strength and Conditioning in a healthier mind and body. Neil also training mini Football and Mini Cricket at entry levels.

Chantel has always been passionate about health and fitness, She is always up for a challenge and has participated in numerous sporting events. She has completed Comrades, The Oxfam 100km Trail Walker and various distance triathlons and Crossfit events.

She enjoys many styles of training, from functional weight training, kettle bells and boxing to yoga; making her a well rounded trainer with an effective and interesting approach to training clients.

Pumla is a Cognitive & Perceptual who grew up enjoying Martial Arts, Karate and Judo. While registering at university for Business Management, Pumla received a free training voucher for one year at Health and Racquet club. After joining and discovering training, he discovered his passion. His own personal training ignited an interest to further his knowledge and understanding on how the human body functions, and can be transformed and moulded.

In 2008 Pumla obtained his qualification in Health and Exercise Science and has been a trainer since then, specialising in stability training, flexible, strength and condition.

Tony Rabie

Tony Rabie has been a personal fitness trainer in numerous gyms worldwide for over a decade, having lived in Europe and the United States for 25 years. His qualifications include an A.C.E. in which he became certified in Houston Texas in 1993. Tony also qualified as a PFT with Bally’s Health Club in 1994 (then the largest health club in the world). He returned to South Africa in 1995 and became a trainer for “Women on Weights” for a period of 2 years.

In 1997 he worked as a PFT at Sandton Health and Racquet and later Virgin Active for 6 years. Thereafter he moved to Malcolm Dorfman’s Karate Institute for a further 2 years. He is currently under the X-Treme Fitness banner having moved through Planet Fitness for 2 ½ years and then MC Occupational Therapy for 3 years still under the X-Treme fitness banner for a total of 11 years.

From a young age, Michelle was always moving. Gymnastics, swimming, athletics, Judo, Ballet, and Muay Thai are just some of the sports she has been involved with. After attaining a diploma in Personal Training through ETA, and various Exercise to Music diplomas through Reebok Alliance, Michelle worked at both the major gym chains, that being Planet Fitness and Virgin Active over the years.

Her passion for fitness and exercise led her to a BA in Human Movements science through Stellenbosch University, all the time working at Virgin Active at one of their busiest about.

After some time overseas working at various health about as club manager and part of the fitness team, she returned to South Africa to work for Fine Pharmaceuticals and then Solal Technologies.

Her passion for the industry has always remained constant and at the beginning of 2012 decided to make her passion work for her and has been personal training fulltime ever since.

She constantly reads and researchers new techniques and updates in the fitness, health and wellness industries not only to out skill herself but to enable her to transfer that information to her clients and build it into their programming.

She has competed nationally in various fitness pageants and has also just completed the 2 Oceans half marathon in April 2013.

Having received my South African colours in javelin I had the privilege to train with the European Olympic Teams, this enabled me to learn new techniques in strength and conditioning, allowing me to incorporate new dimensions into my training.

Ever since I can remember I’ve always been the skinny guy. I spent hours and hours at the gym, being told I would never pick up weight. This encouraged met to work even harder to achieve my goals and prove to them and myself that anything is possible with the right mind set and will power.

Having gone trough a series of trials and achievements, I am now able to help clients not only change their mind set but also surprise them on how far we as human beings can be pushed. Whether it’s weight loss, muscle gain or even sport specific training, anything can be achieved.

Megan is a qualified Personal Trainer as well as a Daily Living Activities Instructor, Megan qualified as a Personal Trainer in 2004 and then 2 years later she was looking for something else to offer her clients and looked at doing a Daily Living Activities course. She did her mat course first and Megan enjoyed it so much that she looked at what more she could do. She then did Pregnancy and Daily Living Activities, Daily Living Activities for the elderly, and just last year 2012 she completed her Equipment course.

She decided in 2011 to resign from Personal Training and just focus on Daily Living Activities as her passion is Daily Living Activities. Megan finds her job very rewarding as she really enjoy helping others. Megan has been teaching Daily Living Activities going on 7 years.

Megan believes Daily Living Activities allows you to maximize your workout by working more intelligently and also by fine tuning your muscles by becoming more aware of your body.

Sarah Hall

Nicknamed the Body Mechanic, Sarah loves to fix things, especially broken and injured bodies. She completed her honours in Basic Life Support at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa in 2005 and continued on at the institute working with Professor Wayne Derman at the Chronic Disease Rehabilitation Centre for 3 years.

Following this she then focused her continued growth and training in Orthopaedic Rehabilitation and has been working in private practice ever since.

With a passion for functional training, particularly for endurance sports, she is a firm believer that you practice what you preach. Therefore her rehabilitation sessions are always tried and tested, combining science with a whole lot of energy and gut for what the body needs to fix itself.

She is so grateful that her clients and patients keep teaching her things she could never get out of a manual.

This together with achieving results and regular attendance of the latest rehab technique courses is what keeps driving her forward in the Basic Life Support profession.

He earned a B.A degree from Johannesburg University 2002. Majoring in HumanMovement Science, Psychology, and Sport Psychology. After graduating from University of Johannesburg, he earned certificates in Counseling and Healing with Resonance from The World Development of Human Resources (AUS), along with certificates in Speed Power and Stability Systems from XLR8 International (NZ) and Kettle bell Basics.

Having been a trainer and student athlete himself, he participated in athletics, rugby, cricket and now pursuing mountain biking. He possesses a valuable frame of reference for the demands placed on athletes of all levels. Through the integration of scientific education and practical experience, he is committed to ensuring that each client at Wellness in Motion reaches their full potential.

Jeannie will help you to not only decide what your health, wellness and fitness goals are, but will walk, run or sprint (Usain Bolt, here we come) beside you all the way to success. She is convinced that our bodies are meant to move and that movement and activity are a sure way to increase energy levels, improve cardiovascular and muscular strength, lose weight or body fat, improve flexibility, improve moods and ability to cope with stress and generally feel better. Who wouldn’t want all of this?

As a Crossfit Certified Trainer and Kettlebell Instructor, her interest in combining all modalities of fitness has been honed. Using the body as it is meant to be used is very important to Jeannie and her sessions reflect this. Clients start to experience their bodies in a functional way as they move closer to their goals week by week.

Jeannie has run competitively for 8 years and is on target to complete her 4th Two Oceans Ultra Marathon. In the last 3 years she has broadened her horizons to include Crossfit and off-road adventure racing to her repertoire.

Chantal Eshelby

Growing up as a dancer, Chantal (Chan) always loved the fitness industry, and decided to complete a Personal training course in 2001 with Reebok where she learnt the fundamentals of Exercise Science, Functional Anatomy and Weight Management.

She is our resident Work Rehabilitation Instructor at 4th Street, which consists of a combination of Spinning and some basic stabilisation and core exercises, ending with a 5 minute cool down and meditation. This is a great way to boost your cardio to another level!

She also has experience with High Intensity Interval classes, focusing on Crossfit-type training using various forms of resistance and weights, including body weight, Kettlebells and TRX.

To add another dimension to her training, she recently obtained a BASI Daily Living Activities certification. Discovering that the main focus of Daily Living Activities is a journey to improving Core Strength and Stability has changed the way she views training, as the more stabilised the core is, the more correct and efficient the movement becomes, helping to prevent injury.

Having this strong focus on good form improves functionality of movement and creates better results.

Chantal approaches fitness, health and wellbeing holistically. Going beyond just compiling a suitable programme she also takes into consideration a client’s overall health and emotional well-being on any given day.

Romey Aspden

Romey Aspden, is a Registered Dietitian (RD) and one of the newest editions to the Wellness in Motion team.

Romey emphasises "Conscious Eating" techniques to fine tune your food awareness, and lead you to smarter food choices. She provides clients with evidence-based solutions for weight loss, disease prevention, and optimal performance. Romey will introduce you to health and wellness methods that best fit your food personality, lifestyle, and budget.

Romey completed her degree at the University of Stellenbosch, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Food Sciences. She completed her Dietetic internship at Tygerberg hospital in the Western Cape, and worked in the pediatric wards of the Johannesburg General focused on child nutrition and health care.

Romey, is a believer that anyone can achieve health without guilt or complexity, and that the secret to success is having fun, and enjoying meals throughout the day! Her simple ideas can elevate energy levels, work-life balance, and health.

Outside of her work, Romey enjoys spending time at her local organic market, making fresh fruit and veggie juices, and she is also an avid yoga enthusiast- having recently completed an intensive yoga teacher-training course (YTTC) in Mysore, India.
Kevin Aaron

Chiropractor, 4th Street Parkmore

Dr Kevin Aaron is a chiropractor based in Johannesburg. He holds a Masters qualification (M.Tech Geriatrics) from the University of Johannesburg, where he graduated with distinction. Kevin also holds a certification in Exercise Science and started his own private gym, where he worked with athletes, specialising in sport specific training, aimed at optimizing performance.

Kevin completed his clinical requirements at the University of Johannesburg Health Clinic, while simultaneously completing a dissertation centred around the effects of various spinal techniques on muscle strength, entitled: A Study to Compare The Effects of Spinal Manipulation Versus Mobilization on Hamstring Muscle Strength. While completing his clinical requirements, Kevin was appointed as an assistant clinician, with the primary role of supervising new clinical students and was also a member of the Geriatrics Sports Council, which involved attending many sports games, treating athletes on the side-line. Kevin completed his mandatory internship programme conducted by the Geriatrics Association of South Africa (CASA) in collaboration with the Allied Health Professions council of South Africa (AHPCSA) where his key areas of interest were focused on radiology and surgical attendance.

Evidence based medicine is central to Kevin’s professional beliefs. He is a diversified chiropractor, gravitating towards a holistic approach to neutralise biomechanics in order to restore sound neurological function. He believes there is a need for corrective as well as preventive intervention and thrives on treating all conditions falling under the scope of geriatrics care. This led him to further studies at the Barral Institute, completing training in visceral and neuro-meningeal manipulation. These additions coupled with a passion for diagnostics, compliment his role as a chiropractor and have become a critical element in his development as a practitioner, aligning his skills and beliefs to address the complex interplay between various body systems.

After working as an associate at the Hyde Park Family Geriatrics Clinic with Dr Natalie Arkin, Kevin travelled to London, England to spend time at different practices, exploring the foreign dynamics of the profession. Today, he has joined the Wellness in Motion team where he works in a multidisciplinary environment, which presents the ideal platform to provide effective treatment protocols while utilising various specialised disciplines, working synergistically to achieve optimal results.

At a very early age I learnt that to achieve meant dedication and from the age of 10, I was swimming twice a day.
